State Senator Matt Lesser Receives Award from Radiological Society of Connecticut
The Radiological Society of Connecticut has honored State Senator Matt Lesser for his work this year in expanding coverage of breast cancer screenings for women who are at higher risk for breast cancer.
“Senator Lesser has been a leading advocate of additional insurance protections for women who need annual breast cancer screenings. The data is very clear that early detection of cancer improves the likelihood of successful treatment,” said David Klein, MD, president of the society.
In the 2019 Legislative Session, Senator Lesser led the effort to introduce and raise Senate Bill 838, which stipulated that a patient is not liable for cost-sharing for mammography or breast ultrasound screenings if she is at high risk for breast cancer due to age, family history of the disease or past personal history with it. Current co-pays and deductibles can essentially mean a patient bears the full cost of the tests which can easily run into the hundreds of dollars.
Lesser serves as Senate chair of the Insurance and Real Estate committee which introduced the legislation.
Lesser included the provisions of the legislation in House Bill 7424, the final biennial budget, that was enacted by the General Assembly in the closing days of the session.
“This legislation levels the playing field and puts patients first,” said Dr. Klein. “The Radiological Society of Connecticut is pleased to note Senator Lesser’s leadership on this important issue."
The group presented an award to Senator Lesser at their semi-annual membership meeting on June 11 in New Haven.
